Adler Hall

Within this historical gem, the underground floor of Adler Hall houses the Graphic Design and Advertising majors of Savannah College of Art and Design. However, it must be acknowledged that the basement area, where creativity often thrives, lacks the presence of windows and ample lighting, creating a somewhat gloomy atmosphere that can dampen the spirits of the aspiring artists and designers who learn there. A solution was needed —a way to add life and energy into this space.

The Theme

To paint the walls with vibrant colors, this would ignite a newfound sense of vitality and inspiration. A full spectrum of hues, ranging from cheerful pinks to vibrant oranges, refreshing greens to calming blues, this was carefully selected to bring life into the surroundings. The treatment of these colors came from the intricate grid systems that form the foundation of design. This grid motif carries onto the ceilings, utilizing the natural pattern of the support beams. Not only are grids used in design, it is also used in photography and film, which classes are also held in Adler Hall.

Beyond Aesthetics

Adler Hall's revamp seeks to incorporate educational value, recognizing the importance of constant learning and discovery, making the walls a canvas for knowledge. Diagrams, informative displays, and tidbits of design information were added to the floor plan, specifically to engage both visitors and students. This integration of educational elements transformed the hall into a source of inspiration, where at every glance — or every step — is held as a reminder of basic design principles.

Color Palette

Concept

Adler Hall is adorned with gray walls topped with artificial lighting, lacking windows to see the outside world. This can be under-stimulating, especially for artists and designers. To add a bit of color, a bright primary color palette is best to be used. To honor the basics of design, color blocking these colors throughout the building layout is essential.
